Look what I found today. I believe this was aired during Women's History Month (March) 2011. Watch a little (yes, there is a commercial in the begining) and you will see Abiola Abrams feature and talk about my work!

Thank you, Abiola for representing my art on this show.

Episode #34 is a two part segment on Women in the Arts. The first segment (originally taped in March 2007) consists of a group show entitled "Hoes, Putas, and Dragon Ladies: Our Sexuality ReMixed" and is a multimedia exhibit featuring performance, visual art and readings for women?s history month. Curated by Abiola Abrams and Sonia Malfa, this exhibit was created as a commentary on the sexual representations of American women of African, Latin and Asian decent. Presented at the Chashama Gallery, featured artists include: Devorah Hill, Urban Envy, Liliana Velasquez, Damali Abrams, Casa Atabex Ache, Bless Da Mic, Ifetayo Abdus-Salam, Nancy Encarnacion, and Jennifer Fuentes. Our second segment (originally taped in December 2010) focuses on the work of Japanese-born artist Toshiko Nishikawa and her exhibit "Senbazuru", held at the Vilcek Foundation, is an interactive installation featuring 1,000 suspended and mirrored orbs and invites viewers to gaze at a world within a world.

My family and I finally saw STOMP. We were planning to go for the longest time, but never got around to it. We had cheap seats so we were on the balcony, waaaaay in the back, but the theatre wasn't very big so we were able to see fine. It was pretty good. The performers were all in great shape. I guess they have to be to be able to stomp around for 1 1/2 hrs.

Next time, I'd like sit closer so I can see the performers faces. Would love to see their subtle expressions that we were not able to see from a far.

I recommend for kids above 5 or 6, if you are planning on taking your children. Any one under that will get bored during the quieter and more subtle numbers. My son did pretty good. He only said he wanted to leave close to the end. My mother brought her ear plugs. For those with sensetive ears, that might be a good idea because my son did say it was too loud a few times.

Thank you to those who have reached out to ask me if I have any relative in the area hit hardest by the Earthquake.

No, I do not.

In the US, there's been a tsunami warning in the West Coast. Santa Cruz and some other harbors have been hit by swelling of the water where boats are swept away and washed out to sea or crashing into other boats, etc. Looks like no one was hurt in Hawaii or the West Coast.

Surfers are out in Santa Cruz trying to catch the best wave of their lives.

I won't be anywhere near the ocean today.

Yes, it's that time again. When parents go crazy over finishing the auction project with the kids.
This is what my son's class made for the auction this year. Each child made about 4 to 5 of these origami lotus flowers to make this lamp.

We used textured Japanese paper with neutural color and print and attached them onto an Ikea Maskros pendant lamp. Pretty simple yet effective idea.

The theme this year was illumination.

JERSEY BOYS IN LAS VEGAS

I just came back from Vegas and I must say that the highlight of the trip was seeing Jersey Boys. Don't ask me why I never saw it in on Broadway in NYC, since I lived only 6 blocks away from the August Wilson Theather. I used to walk by the theater looking at the posters and the theater goers lined up outside. I guess it's one of those things. I saw the poster and it said Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons, so I just assumed the music would not speak to me. But hearing the reviews and the hype made me want to see it while in Vegas. It was either Jersey Boys or Phantom. I've seen Phantom too many times.

Let me tell you, I heard the music loud and clear. Funny how knowing someone's background and life story makes you really appreciate the music. The whole production was well done. I bought the soundtrack from itunes, I watched the original Four Seasons on youtube.

If you are thinking about seeing it, it's well worth the $$. Get a close up seat so you can see the cast up close. It's one of those shows where you want to be close. You will not regret it.

Oh, the only thing that I warn some of you about is the cursing. It seemed like every other word was a curse word. If you have a problem with that then don't go see it. But to those who were complaining about the cursing after seeing it... Come on, the title IS the "Jersey Boys"... What did you expect?

I recently came across a bunch of sites that feature DEKOTORA. That's Decoration Trucks. I remember seeing some of these when I used to live in Japan, but none like the newer super decorated ones. I also remember seeing decorated trucks in Torakku Yaro when I was a child. A movie about a truck driver in Japan, but again, the trucks featured in the film were nothing like these. They look like transformers to me. Kinda flashy, yet inspiring. Hard to believe these trucks are actually used.

Wow, so much stress lately. One thing after another. It was non-stop. How much can I take?

But, finally, my son is in the school of our choice. Kinda sad, because we were ok with the school that he was attending and he has so many friends there. Of course it wasn't perfect, no school is. There were some minor and not so minor dramas, which I thought were typical school yard dramas that many kids experience. We were happy over all with what the school represented and taught our son. I hope they are able to create a school culture where teachers are respected and no type of violence is tolerated. Or maybe, I just need to toughen up my son a bit. I don't know, sometimes. But I think this school truely was a hidden gem. I'm glad we were able to put our son there for a little bit.

I must say, though, when you are given an opportunity like this - The new school is considered one of the best schools in the city - you cannot say no. So when they said, your son must start tomorrow otherwise, we must give the spot to someone else, we said, "Oh yes, we will be there!" This new school is a better fit for my son's personality. I hope he really enjoys attending this school.

I feel very lucky, although we were like the 7th one (I think) to be called up and we bitched and moaned about those spots being taken, trust me... But at least it happened. I had given up all hope when I was told that it was a go. Why do they make it so stressful for parents? They must enjoy seeing parents suffer. lol.

This whole enrollment process is just crazy.

At least it is one less thing to worry about at this point.

I just saw Mountains That Take Wing - Angela Davis & Yuri Kochiyama: A Conversation on Life, Struggles & Liberation @ the San Francisco Black Film Festival (SFBFF). It was well worth the $15 to see two of my sheros converse about different issues. Pretty decent Q&A session with the filmmakers as well. These women are bridges between different communities (the filmmakers, Davis, and Kochiyama).

It's showing again at the LGBT FEST @ the Roxy on 6/20 @ 11:00 am. Not very many people came to the premiere. Please go see it and support this powerful film! Or google it to see if it's showing in your town.

I guess as Asian Americans, we have so few public figures to hold on to. I have been let down a few times now. I suppose we can't expect them all to speak up for our community but that would be nice.

Trying hard to get my head together. I'm sketching, painting, trying to stay creative. I just cannot get to that place to start painting something for myself. Maybe, I've been working on other's projects too long. Maybe, it's because I am too exhausted psychologically and physically. Everything seem meaningless. I don't resemble myself at all. I look in the mirror and it's someone else. I have nothing left for myself after going through the motions of "life." How do I get myself back? How do I recharge myself? Things haven't been right for so long that I don't remember the last time I was truly happy about myself. All I know is that I need to get it back fast, before it's all gone.
